The Sphere

Sept 11, 2001

The Sphere: This sculpture was the centerpiece of the plaza between the Twin Towers. It was recovered and placed in Battery Park. I remember all the people having lunch around this sculpture. I often wonder if any of them might have lost their lives.

There is a plaque at the new site in Battery Park that reads: "For three decades, this sculpture stood in the Plaza of the World Trade Center. Entitled "The Sphere," it was conceived by artist Fritz Koenig as a symbol for world peace. It was damaged during the tragic events of September 11, 2001, but endures as an icon of hope and the indestructible spirit of Americans. The Sphere was placed here on March 11, 2002 in memory of all who lost their lives to terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center."

The Sphere. My father is on the left and I'm on the right. The Sphere is placed in the north end of Battery Park. It's actually right by the hot dog stand that I've gone to several times.
